Question · Walk-on rooflights

Obscured walk-on glass for privacy, with the daylight still in

Walk-on glass can be frosted, etched or fritted so nobody sees into the room below. Daylight still comes through, a little softer.

The short answer

Yes. Walk-on glass can be made obscure so nobody can make out the room below, while daylight still comes through. The usual routes are a fritted pattern fired on the glass, an acid-etched face, or a frosted interlayer inside the laminate. Each one trades a little clarity and a little brightness for privacy, and each is chosen for the room underneath.

Three ways to blur the view through the glass

Privacy glass is not one product. The method decides how the panel looks from above, how it behaves when wet and how much light it passes.

  1. Fritted pattern. A ceramic enamel is printed onto the glass as dots, lines or a solid tint, then fired into the surface. The print breaks up the view, and the gaps between the dots still pass light. It is very hard wearing, because it becomes part of the glass.
  2. Acid-etched face. The surface is treated with acid to give an even, satin frost, like a bathroom window. The result is soft and uniform, with no pattern to see. Because the texture sits in the surface, it needs to be placed where it will not be scuffed.
  3. Frosted interlayer. Walk-on glass is laminated, so a translucent white or milky layer can be bonded between the sheets. It is sealed away from feet, cleaning and weather, and it gives a clean, even diffusion.

Fritted and etched finishes can also be combined with the grip treatment that the upper surface needs. The two jobs, privacy and slip resistance, are separate, and our page on anti-slip finishes for walk-on glass explains the grip side.

Judging a finish before it is ordered

A catalogue photograph tells you very little about obscure glass. The effect depends on the distance between the glass and the eye, and on the light on both sides.

The better test is a sample held in place. Hold a small sheet against the ceiling opening, stand where someone on the terrace would stand, then look up from the room at different times of day. Check it at dusk with the room lit, because that is when a shadow shows through most. Check it again in bright daylight, to see how much light the pattern holds back. A finish that looks right in a showroom can look too strong over a hallway or too weak over a shower.

We bring samples to the survey for that reason, and the finish we recommend goes into the written spec with the reason beside it.

Comparing the finishes

The table sets the three side by side for a terrace where someone stands above a room that needs privacy.

FinishLook from belowWear
Fritted dots or linesPatterned, shapes blurredVery durable
Acid-etchedEven, soft frostKeep off the top face
Frosted interlayerEven milky diffusionSealed inside the laminate

Where the pattern sits decides a lot. A print or etch on an inner face, between layers or on the underside of the top sheet, stays out of the weather and out of the reach of shoes. One on the exposed top face has to put up with grit, cleaning and scratching. We usually want the privacy treatment protected inside the build, which is a point we raise at the survey. The page on whether walk-on glass scratches shows why the top face is the one to keep simple.

What privacy costs in daylight

Privacy is bought with light. Any treatment that stops a person being seen also holds back a little of the daylight coming through.

A fritted pattern with widely spaced dots passes more light than one that is tightly packed, and a solid tint passes less than either. An even frost spreads the light rather than blocking it, so the room below gets soft, shadowless brightness instead of a sharp patch of sun on the floor. For a bathroom or a bedroom that is often exactly what you want. For a kitchen or a home office it may be more than you need.

The right level depends on how close the nearest window is, who could look down into the room and whether the terrace above is shared. We choose it with the room in view, and our page on walk-on rooflight light levels explains the wider trade between strength and brightness. The panel can also be made a little larger to make up for what the finish holds back.

Above a bathroom or bedroom

These are the rooms where people ask for privacy, and the answers differ slightly.

A bathroom rooflight works best with a strong even frost or a dense fritted pattern, because the room is used with the light on and the ceiling is close to the glass. A bedroom needs softer obscuring that still lets the morning in, and it also needs attention to the noise from the terrace, since feet on glass can be heard at the pillow. Laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer damps footsteps, and the choice goes into the quiet spec that comes with every quote.

Condensation in a bathroom is worth a mention. Damp air rises to the coolest surface, and a walk-on panel sits in the ceiling. A good thermal build and proper ventilation keep it clear, and Building Regulations set extract requirements for the room. The glazing works with the ventilation, it does not replace it.

For a terrace above a bedroom or bathroom, the same planning and guarding rules apply as for any terrace. Our page on walk-on rooflights for roof terraces sets them out.

Choosing privacy without losing the point of the glass

Does frosted glass get slippery when wet?

A smooth etched face can be slipperier than a textured one, which is why grip and privacy are specified together. See whether walk-on glass is slippery when wet.

Is a fritted panel harder to keep clean?

Not especially. A soft cloth and mild cleaner do the job, and our walk-on glass care guide has the routine.

Can I add obscuring to an existing walk-on panel?

Film can be applied, but it will not match a finish built into the laminate. If the privacy matters, a new panel is the better route, and the finish is written into the quote.

Will the room feel darker?

Slightly, compared with clear glass. Most of the difference is cancelled by choosing a lighter pattern or sizing the panel up. To see what suits the room, get a quote, or return to walk-on rooflight installation.
