Clear Skylights, in one idea
A rooflight lets in light, and it can let in noise too. Clear Skylights exists to specify every rooflight and skylight for both, so the room you get is bright and quiet.
The roof is the thinnest part of most homes. Put a sheet of glass in it, face it at the sky, and you have made a fine window and a fine drum. The glass, the seals and the upstand decide which one you live under. We choose them for the room, write the choice down, and then fit them properly.
Our tagline says it: clear skies, quiet rooms. Clear skies is the aviation phrase, which suits a town that grew up beside an airport. It is also our name, and it means the daylight is kept. Quiet rooms is the half we add.
Why we started from sound
Crawley is a place where the sky is busy. Gatwick sits inside the borough, and aircraft pass over the town and the villages around it. The A23 and M23 run through, the Brighton main line cuts across at Three Bridges, and rain on a flat-roofed extension can sound like a tin roof.
A homeowner planning a rooflight usually asks about size, price and style. Few ask what the room will hear, yet a loft bedroom or a kitchen lantern is where the answer matters most. So we start there. At the survey we listen, and we write down what we hear.
That habit shapes everything else. It is why we talk about pane thickness, laminated inner glass, the gap between panes, the gaskets and the build of the upstand. It is also why we never quote decibel figures. A figure would sound exact and prove nothing about your roof. A specification names the parts you can check.
Who fits us best
We work for homeowners across Crawley and the 30 miles around: Horsham, Haywards Heath, Reigate, East Grinstead, Brighton and the villages between. Our work is residential, and it is installation and replacement.
The people who fit us best are adding or replacing roof glazing in a room they use at the times when noise matters most.
- A loft bedroom, where early departures and late arrivals are heard first.
- A kitchen extension, where rain on the lantern reaches the dinner table.
- A home office, where a call has to be clear.
- A nursery, where a quiet room is the whole point.
Many of these owners have lived under a noisy rooflight, or fear one. They want plain answers, a tidy job in a lived-in house and a specification they can understand. That is the brief we work to.
The three things we hold to
These apply on every job.
Light, kept. Daylight is still the point of a rooflight. We size and place each unit for the room, so the glass earns its place in the roof. A quiet rooflight that leaves the room dim has failed. Our roof window and sun tunnel work begins with where the light is needed.
Quiet, specified. The glazing build, the seals and the upstand are chosen for the noise that room actually hears, and they are written in the quiet spec that comes with every quote. You see the reasoning before you commit, and you can check the delivery against it.
A tidy, lawful job. We install to current Building Regulations, and we handle the Building Control notification where the work is notifiable. We protect the room while we work, make good inside and leave it clean. A 10-year workmanship guarantee stands behind the fitting.
How we work, from first message to finished room
The route is short and it stays the same from a sun tunnel to a large lantern. You tell us about the room and the roof. We visit, look and listen. You receive a written quote and the quiet spec together.
The visit does most of the work. We look at the roof covering, the structure below, the access and the room. We stand inside and note the sound. Then we go back and write. Nothing is priced from a phone call, because a rooflight price depends on things that can only be seen.
If you go ahead, we agree the dates, protect the floors and furniture, and do the work. Where the job is notifiable, we handle the Building Control notification. At the end we make good inside and hand over the paperwork, including the guarantee terms and the manufacturer's product warranty. Read more on the get a quote page, or on the guarantee page.
What we install
We install and replace ten kinds of rooflight and skylight. The range is wide so that you can choose the right unit for the roof, without being steered toward the one we happen to fit.
For flat roofs we fit flat roof rooflights and roof lanterns, and walk-on rooflights where the glass has to carry weight. For pitched roofs we fit roof windows, including VELUX windows, and conservation rooflights where the building is protected. We fit opening and electric units, and we replace units that have failed. Each of the ten has its own page, reached from the homepage.
Plain about what we tell you
We keep our claims to what we can show. There are no star ratings on this site and no counts, because we would rather show you a written spec than a number.
What we can show is specific. A written quiet spec comes with every quote. The work is installed to current Building Regulations. We handle Building Control notification where it is required. A 10-year workmanship guarantee covers the installation, and its terms are given in writing before you commit. Each of those is checkable, and each is stated on this site in plain words.
When you read our prices, you will find that we keep them for the costs page, where they appear as general market guides. Your own figure comes after the survey, because the roof has to be seen first.
Start with a conversation about the room
Tell us what the room is for, what the roof is made of and what bothers you about the glass you have now, or fear in glass you are planning. That is all we need to begin.
Use the quote form on this page, or find WhatsApp and email on the contact page. We will come and listen, and then we will write it down.
