The short answer
Not if the room is set up for sleep. In high summer the sun is up in Sussex before five, and a bare skylight will let that in. A blackout blind that runs in side channels, a sensible position in the roof slope and the right glass coating keep a loft bedroom dark until you choose otherwise. Plan all three before the opening is cut.
The early hours, and why a slope gathers them
Sleep is light-sensitive, and a sloping pane is pointed at the sky. Midsummer mornings start earlier than people expect, and the glass catches all of it.
The sun rises a little before five o'clock British Summer Time around midsummer in this part of England, and the sky is bright some time before that. A vertical window in a side wall sees that light at a low angle and only from one direction. A rooflight faces upwards. It admits the pale sky light as well as any direct sun, and with nothing to block it, the ceiling of a loft bedroom can glow while the street is still quiet.
That is a strength at noon and a nuisance at dawn. The same pane does both jobs, so the answer is not to avoid the skylight. It is to control it. A room that is bright when you want it and dark when you do not is a matter of three decisions, and each one is cheaper to make at the survey than afterwards.
Choosing where the opening sits
Position decides what falls on the bed and when. Move the glass a metre and the morning changes.
Orientation comes first. A rooflight on an east-facing slope takes the earliest direct sun. One on a west slope is dim at dawn and strong in the evening, which suits a room you go to late. A north slope gives even, soft light all day with no direct beam, and it is the calmest choice for a bedroom. A south slope gathers the most light overall and the most heat. Our page on where to position a skylight walks through the options for a whole room.
Then look at where the bed will be. Light from directly above a pillow reaches the eyes of a sleeper more than light that lands on the floor at the foot of the bed. Where the roof allows it, we keep the glass towards the footboard end or over the walkway. Two smaller units, one each side of the room, can give more usable daylight than one large unit above the headboard, and they are easier to darken. For the sizing side of that choice see how to size a rooflight for the room.
In the post-war homes around Crawley the loft has a fixed ridge height and a rafter spacing that decide where an opening can go. The survey checks that first, and our note on skylights in post-war homes around Crawley covers the usual constraints.
A blackout blind that really blacks out
The light in a dark-looking room gets past the edges of the blind. The fabric is rarely the weak point.
A plain roller blind hangs in the open, and light spills round its sides and along the top and bottom. A proper blackout blind for a roof window runs in side guides fixed to the frame, so the fabric is held against the glass reveal with no gap. The best fabrics have an opaque coating or backing and are designed for exactly this job. Fitted well, the room can be made very dark at midday. Cheaper blinds leave a bright line at each edge that the eye finds at once.
Other points worth checking on the quote:
- Whether the blind is made for that exact roof window, and not trimmed to fit.
- Whether it is manual, or motorised on a remote control. Motorised is worth having when the glass is out of reach.
- Whether there is a second, pleated or honeycomb blind for daytime, with the blackout used only at night.
Motor and remote options are part of the electric and opening rooflight installation service, and the standard range is covered in our roof window installation pages. There is a further benefit: a heavy blind changes how the room feels in the rain, which is the subject of does a blind reduce rain noise under a skylight. One caution from the damp side, covered in whether rooflights cause condensation: a blind pulled tight to the glass all night can leave the pane cold and misty by morning.
What the glass itself can do
Coatings tame glare and heat. They do not turn a pane into a wall, and they will not darken a bedroom at dawn.
Solar control glass has a thin coating that reflects part of the sun's heat and cuts glare. A tint or a mid-grey finish goes further. In a south-facing loft bedroom that matters for summer comfort more than for sleep, because a loft under a sloping roof can heat up fast. The price is a slightly cooler, darker daylight and a small reduction in light at midwinter, so it should be chosen deliberately. Our service on energy efficient rooflights sets out the glazing choices.
It helps to be plain about one thing. Even a dark-tinted pane lets through a good deal of dawn light, since you are looking at a sky far brighter than a bedroom. For sleep, the blind does the darkening and the glass manages the heat. The two together are a better answer than either one alone.
| Choice | Helps with | Does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Side-guided blackout blind | Dawn light, late evenings | Summer heat on its own |
| Solar control coating | Glare, heat gain | Early light in a bright sky |
| North or west slope | Direct early sun | Sky glow before sunrise |
| Glass away from the bed head | Light on the pillow | Ceiling glow |
Bringing it into the quote
A bedroom gets its own line on the survey. We ask when you sleep, which way the slope faces and what you want to wake to.
The glazing build, the blind and the position are written down together in the quiet spec that comes with every quote. The same note records the noise we heard at the survey, from aircraft on the Gatwick routes to rain on the slope, because the same loft that catches the dawn catches the sky's sounds too. A laminated acoustic inner pane handles the noise and has no effect on how dark the room gets, so the two are specified side by side.
The work is installed to current Building Regulations and made good inside, with the Building Control notification handled where it applies. If you are curious about the approach in general, our skylight and rooflight installation in Crawley page starts from the room, and you can get a quote for the bedroom by telling us the roof direction and the bed position.
Dawn and bedroom questions, answered plainly
Will a skylight make my loft bedroom too bright in summer?
It will be bright at first light unless you fit a blackout blind. With the blind down in its side guides the room can be made properly dark. Without one, a skylight lets in more early light than a wall window.
Which way should a bedroom rooflight face?
North gives steady light with no direct beam, which is the calmest. West keeps the morning dim. East gives the earliest sun, and is a good choice only if you like to wake with the light.
Can I add a blackout blind to an existing roof window?
Often, yes, if the blind is made for that window and its guides can be fixed to the frame. Older or unusual units may not have a matching blind. We check the make and size at the survey, and replacing an old skylight is the route when it is not practical.
Does tinted glass stop dawn light?
It softens it, and cuts glare and heat, but it does not block it. Sleeping needs a blackout blind as well. The tint is there for comfort.
